Vanier Scholarship at the University of British Columbia 2022/23

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the Vanier Scholarship at the University of British Columbia is designed to attract and retain world-class PhD students, supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high level of scholarly achievement.

The Vanier Canada Postgraduate Scholarship provides funding for postgraduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering and health-related fields. The Vanier CGS is valued at $50,000 annually for up to three years.

Vanier Scholarship 2022/23 | Eligibility criteria

To be considered for the Vanier Scholarship at the University of British Columbia, applicants must meet the following:

  • to be indicated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received the Vanier CGS quota.
  • Pursuing your first PhD (including a joint program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD or JD/PhD – if it has a proven and significant research component).
  • Do you intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral study and research (or a joint graduate research program such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) at the institution indicated?
  • Have completed a maximum of 20 months of full-time study in your PhD program by 1 May 2023;
    • The PhD program would begin after the completion of the master’s degree. The months of studies completed are counted from the date of enrollment in the Ph.D.
  • You have completed a maximum of 32 months of full-time study in your doctoral program (ie, joint graduate research program, accelerated, previously enrolled without obtaining a master’s degree), by May 1, 2023, if:
    • Enrolled in a joint postgraduate research programme, e.g. MD/PhD, MA/PhD, DVM/PhD. Applicants in this category have access to the 32-month window whether they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program or not:
      • Study months are calculated starting from the date on which a candidate is officially enrolled in the joint program (including the Master’s part of the program).
    • has enrolled directly from a bachelor’s degree to a PhD (not previously enrolled in a master’s program).
      • The months of studies completed are counted from the date of enrollment in the Ph.D.
    • Previously enrolled in a graduate program without obtaining the degree.
      • The months of studies completed are calculated from the initial registration date of the Master.
  • You have achieved a first class average as determined by your institution in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Applicants are encouraged to contact the institution to determine the first class average. and
  • Must not hold or have held a PhD-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a PhD programme.

Application Procedures

How to apply: Interested applicants for the 2022/23 Vanier Scholarship at the University of British Columbia must follow the steps outlined (below):

To apply, applicants must do the following by the deadline stated above:

  1. Notify the selected UBC graduate program that they intend to apply for the Vanier CGS.
    • This is an important step, as your UBC graduate program should be aware of your intention to apply for Vanier, as they must support (submit) your application in order for it to reach the university stage of the awards competition.
  2. Provide official, updated UBC graduate program transfers for all post-secondary studies (including non-degree studies, e.g. exchange/transfer course credits) by August 31, 2022.
  3. Request letters of support from four referees:
    • two letters from referees evaluating the applicant’s academic excellence, research potential and demonstrated and potential leadership ability are submitted electronically via ResearchNet by the referee
    • two leadership letters of recommendation; two PDF files are provided to the applicant, who uploads the letters to their electronic application file
    • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI): Referees are encouraged to review Vanier’s EDI resources incorporate EDI estimates into their reference letters.
  1. Create a “Vanier-Banting Academic” resume.
  2. Prepare the other required documents (Research Contributions, Personal Leadership Statement, Special Circumstances [if applicable]Research Proposal, Project Reports and Voluntary Self-Identification Form for Indigenous Applicants [optional]). Vanier’s presentation standards and page limits must be followed.
  3. Submit a completed Vanier CGS application via ResearchNet
