Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) 2023

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program was created with the goal of attracting and retaining outstanding doctoral students and establishing Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher education.

Scholarship Information:

  • Deadline: Before 1 November 2022 (annual)

  • Host institutions: Canadian universities with Vanier CGS distribution.
  • Level/fields of study: Doctoral programs (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).
  • Fields of study: Health research? natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social science and/or humanities research.
  • Number of Scholarships: Up to 166 scholarships per year
  • Scholarship Value/Duration: $50,000 per year for three years.

An eligible PhD program must include the following:

A major research component leading to the completion of a thesis, major research project, thesis, scholarly publication, performance, case report, and/or exhibit that is reviewed at the institutional level as a prerequisite for program completion.

Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (eg, MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) as well as clinically oriented degree programs are also eligible programs if they have a significant independent research component, as described above.

Eligibility Requirement:

• Nomination from a single Canadian institution holding a Vanier CGS quota.

• Non-PhD degree holder (including joint undergraduate/graduate research programme) Please note that only the PhD part of a combined degree is eligible for funding.

• Intention to continue, after announcement of results, doctoral (or a joint master’s program) full-time study and research at the institution indicated.

• Having completed doctoral studies of 20 months or less by 1 May 2023

• Having completed 32 months or less of full-time study in their PhD program by 1 May 2023 if:

• Enrolled in a joint graduate research program. Applicants who fall into this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program. the

• Direct access from bachelor’s degree to PhD (no time for a master’s program). the

• Access from a master’s degree to a PhD program without obtaining a master’s degree.

• Having achieved a first class average as determined by your institution in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Applicants should check their first class average as set by individual institutions

• Not hold, or hold, a PhD-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC.

Application instructions:

• Applicants must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a Vanier CGS quota. Students cannot apply directly to the Vanier CGS program.

• Candidates can apply in one of two ways. Either by the student notifying faculty at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program Or by the institution initiating the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.

• The student must prepare the application and submit it to the indicating institution by the specified internal deadline using the ResearchNet application system. Following this, the nominating institution promotes nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat until November 1, 2022.
