The University of the West of England is a public research university, located in and around Bristol, England, which was granted university status in 1992.
In common with the University of Bristol and the University of Bath, it traces its origins to the Merchant Venturers’ Technical College, which was founded as a school in 1595 by the Merchant Manufacturers’ Company.
The university consists of several campuses in Greater Bristol. Frenchay Campus is the largest campus in terms of student numbers, as most of its courses are based there.
However, the city campus provides courses in the creative and cultural industries and consists of Bower Ashton Studios, Arnolfini, Spike Island and Watershed.
The foundation is affiliated with Bristol Old Vic Theater School and accredits higher education courses. The Frenchay Campus and Glenside Campus house the majority of the School of Health and Applied Sciences, with another Adult Nursing group established at the Gloucester Campus.
In addition, the Hartpury Campus provides education in animal science, sport, equine, agriculture and conservation. In 2018, the Teaching Excellence Framework was awarded University Gold.
The University of Bristol was created just a few years later, leaving the Merchant Venturers Technical College to found UWE Bristol. The college was partly responsible for the invention of Bristol College of Science and Technology (BCST) in 1960, which later obtained a royal charter to form the University of Bath in 1965.
The technical college in turn became Bristol Polytechnic in 1970; the then main campus was at Ashley Down, now a campus of Bristol City College.
Additionally, Bower Ashton Studios was established in 1969 as the West of England College of Art, once the art school of the Royal West of England Academy on Queens Road, Bristol.
The St Matthias site (which no longer belongs to the university) was originally built in the Victorian era and was a teacher training college. These campuses, along with campuses at Redland, Ashley Down, Unity Street and Frenchay became part of Bristol Polytechnic in about 1976.
In addition, the volume of world-leading research at UWE Bristol has increased by 170%, according to the results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.
