Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Requirements

  • Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. Scholars should support this mission and welcome opportunities to promote diverse and inclusive cultures in their communities.
  • Scholars of the Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship must be enrolled at a university in Africa
  • The proposed research must be closely related to one of the themes of the Microsoft Africa Research Institute (MARI)
    • AI/ML/NLP/data science: In many useful applications, data are often sparse and biased. Understanding how we work in these settings and deliver useful results has a big impact on many practical problems and gives us a deep understanding of what it means to learn with data. From practical applications like NLP to understanding the fairness and generalizability of results and enhancing our understanding of what is possible with the available data for a particular problem. We care about how we work best with data limitations.
    • Health: Advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence offer us the opportunity to address disparities in access and delivery of quality healthcare for all people. We are interested in understanding and exploring areas where technology can help bridge the gap, from helping healthcare professionals achieve their roles more effectively, to bridging the last mile to patients, by scaling delivery and of reaching quality healthcare using technology.
    • Sustainability: Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability will be achieved by leveraging cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to transform the way we monitor, model and ultimately help solve environmental challenges facing the world. At MARI, we apply artificial intelligence and analytics to understand and develop solutions to address sustainability challenges. If you are a student enrolled in an African University pursuing a PhD program in artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics or a related field with a focus on solving problems related to sustainability, we would be delighted to receive your application.??
    • human computer interaction: We are looking for collaborators in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) to explore usability and design questions in the fields of work, health sustainability and society. Typically, HCI interns lead and conduct research studies (online or on-site), usability studies, literature reviews, and design interventions.
  • Students must be entering their second year or post-doctoral program sometime between August 2022 and July 2023 taking into account transfers, authorized leaves of absence, etc.
  • PhD students must remain enrolled at the university at the start of the 2023 academic year or forfeit the award. The Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship is not available for extension. If you need time away for family or medical leave, this will be arranged. If you are unsure whether a need for time away will affect the award, you can contact Microsoft Research Fellowships at [email protected]
  • Payment of the award, as described above, will be made directly to the university and will be distributed in accordance with university policies. Microsoft will have control over how any remaining funds are used if the student no longer qualifies for funding (eg, if the student withdraws from the program, graduates, or transfers to a different university).
