Admission to Kumamoto University MEXT Scholarship 2023 | Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the 2023 MEXT Scholarship for Graduate Studies at Kumamoto University:

  • Applicants must have an excellent academic record in a 4-year undergraduate program and a 2-year graduate program from an accredited institution in related fields.
  • Applicants must have the nationality of a country specified by MEXT and will have a student visa upon entering Japan.
  • Candidates must be in good physical and mental health
  • Applicants must have good communication skills in English equivalent to or above CEFR level B2.

Application Procedures

How to apply: Eligible applicants for the 2023 MEXT Scholarship at Kumamoto University for Graduate Studies should contact a candidate supervisor at Kumamoto University and ask if they can apply for a MEXT scholarship under their supervision.

Once supervision is secured, applicants must submit the required documents to the Department of Academic/International Affairs by post by the application deadline.

  • health certificate
  • Academic certificates and certified official transcripts in English
  • Abstracts of bachelor’s or master’s theses in English
  • Applicant’s passport or official certificate of citizenship
  • Letter of recommendation from professor or research supervisor
  • Letter of consent from the employer
  • Official TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS score if the applicant’s native language is not English
  • Letter of commitment to study at Kumamoto University when selected for the scholarship.
