    Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships in the University of Glasgow for the academic term 2022/23. The scholarship fund for black students based in the UK to undertake PhD research at the University in any research area.

    Fellowships also provide enhanced experience through externships, placements, leadership training, community-building activities, and networking opportunities. There are up to 10 scholarship opportunities available. The scholarship covers a stipend (estimated at £18,022 for 2023 entry) and fees for up to four years.

    James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships 2022/23 | Eligibility criteria

    To be considered for the James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Be Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed White and Black Caribbean, Mixed White and Black African based in the UK or other mixed background (to include Black African, Black Caribbean or Black Other).
    • Must have obtained a relevant bachelor’s and master’s degree from a reputable higher education institution.
    • Must demonstrate excellent academic and research abilities.

    Application Procedures

    How to apply: Interested applicants for the James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships at the University of Glasgow 2023 must follow the steps outlined (below):

    1. See the research interests of staff at the University of Glasgow so you can recommend a research area and supervisor.
    2. Submit a completed expression of interest form
    3. Follow it application process, starting with contacting potential supervisors. When contacting a potential supervisor, be sure to state that you wish to apply for a James McCune Smith Scholarship as one of the options for funding. The research topic for the James McCune Smith Scholarship is decided by the applicant in conjunction with their potential supervisor.
    4. Submit your personal statement through Scholarship Portal. The personal statement should include up to 500 words about your research interest and why you want to be a James McCune Smith Fellow.
    5. Apply to the University MyCampus System. Name the James McCune Smith Scholarship as one of the funding options under Finance in the online full application.
