School holidays are definitely an expensive time to travel.

School holidays are definitely an expensive time to travel. On the contrary, if we decide to escape on other dates, we can save a lot of money.
In the world of supply and demand, airlines and accommodation providers raise their prices during vacation days, which complicates the task of finding cheap flights, forcing parents to fork out… or stay home.

    Geneva, Switzerland
With abundant snow in the Alps, Geneva is an ideal last-minute trip destination for winter sports enthusiasts, offering more than 100 ski resorts within a two-hour drive. One of the closest is Lelex, a small resort prepared with 13 ski lifts, ideal for beginners. Another of the resorts is Morzena, which is part of the Les Portes du Soleil complex, a huge and linked ski area with around 650 different slopes, equipped with more than 200 lifts. Travel the week after the school break and you’ll get flights for less than a quarter of what it would cost during the holidays.

    Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt
With almost guaranteed sunshine and plenty of beach area, Egypt has long been a hit with families. Avoid the child invasion by traveling the week before the school break and save more than €170. That way you’ll have a lot more to spend on diving adventures in the Red Sea, quad biking in the desert, and of course, beer.

    Orlando, Florida
With Harry Potter promotion reaching magical dimensions and Muggles from all over the world looking forward to enjoying the delights of his “Wizarding World”, Orlando will become even more popular when its new attraction about the famous character opens this spring. For now, you can avoid these crowds and the school vacation crowds, enjoy alternative attractions, or go see alligators in Everglades National Park by airboat. Give yourself a little luxury and go shopping for Tiffany & Co, Cartier, or Jimmy Choo at the Millenia Mall, and then enjoy the local vintage at Lakeridge Winery.

    Dubai, UAE
Dubai is hosting a growing share of the family holiday market, offering a number of theme parks for the very young. Make sure you avoid all this, and the costs that come with it, by traveling the week before the school break. That way you’ll have more money to spend on fancy shopping malls, a champagne breakfast or some cheap gold nuggets at the Gold Market.

Jamaica has the beaches, the relaxing atmosphere and the cocktails to make you forget the winter blues. There are hotels for all tastes and prices, but one of the best is the Resort Breezes Runaway Bay&Golf Club, where you can take a walk and have a drink at the bar. You can also swim with the dolphins, go rafting or visit the Bob Marley museum. Take this trip to the Caribbean country a week before school break and you’ll save around €230 on the flight.

    Marrakesh, Morocco
The proximity of Marrakesh to Spain has made this destination a place for those looking for something exotic, and only a short flight away. In the heart of the old city is Djemaa el-Fna, a square filled with a carnivalesque atmosphere with artists, actors and local stalls with delicious Moroccan food. Intrepid travelers can even head out of the city to Oukaimeden, situated in the Atlas Mountains for “African skiing”. Travel the week before the kids go on vacation and you’ll save more than €343 on your flights.

    Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
You will have no problem finding your own corner of the Fuerteventura sun. This relaxed and quiet island has more than 200 km. of coastline and is located on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico, where temperatures remain around 23 degrees, even during the winter. Put your umbrella on the sands of Jandía, a large natural beach of about 20 km. There are also many natural parks, salt marshes and dunes to explore. All this just three hours by plane from Spain. Travel outside of school holidays and you’ll pay less than half.

    Paphos, Cyprus
Cyprus has a mild winter climate, where it is possible to enjoy a few days at the beach even during these months.
Unlike other resorts on the island like Ayia Napa, Paphos is open for business all year round. In addition, this region has some 11 beaches with blue flags, making it ideal for exploring jewels such as Konnos Bay, Cape Greco or Coral Bay, in its vicinity. Get ahead of the school holidays and save more than €171 on your flight.

    Luqa, Malta
This small Mediterranean island is becoming a popular spot with families due to its child-friendly disposition, year-round good weather and affordable prices. Visit before the school holidays and you can enjoy Maltese’s typical Mediterranean cuisine, attractive architecture and interesting history, making it an ideal place for travelers without children as well. The fact that you save over €114 also helps to sweeten this trip.
