The Government of Ireland through the Department of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce the Ireland Fellows Program – Africa Scholarship 2023/24 for young Africans to undertake postgraduate level programs in Ireland with program fees, flights, accommodation and living expenses fully covered .

The Ireland Fellows Program enables early to mid-career students from eligible countries with leadership potential to benefit from a prestigious, world-class, quality education professional who contribute to capacity building.

Ireland Fellows Program – Africa Scholarship | DETAILS

The scholarship offers selected students the opportunity to undertake a fully-funded one-year postgraduate level program at an educational institution (HEI) in Ireland. The award covers program fees, flights, accommodation and living expenses. The program seeks to nurture future leaders, develop capacity within the country to achieve national SDG targets; and build positive relations with Ireland.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for one Ireland – Africa Scholarship Scheme the award commencing at the beginning of the 2023 academic year, applicants must:

  • Be a resident of one of the following countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Have at least two or three years of substantial work experience, that is directly related in your proposed study programme, depending on the country (see Pages 6 and 7 for details).
  • Hold an academic degree from an accredited and government-recognized institution of higher education, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale) – e.g. first class honor or second class distinction, Grade 1 (second class honor Grade 2 may be accepted if the applicant has substantial directly relevant work experience). Must have been awarded to 2011 or later (ie within the last 12 years).
  • You do not already hold a master’s degree or higher. You are not currently undertaking a program at Master’s level or higher, or are due to start a program at Master’s level or higher in the academic year 2022/23.
  • Apply to start a new Master’s level program in Ireland no earlier than August 2023.
  • Be able to demonstrate the following: leadership skills and ambition. a commitment to achieving the SDGs in your country; and a commitment to help build positive relations with Ireland.
  • They have identified and selected three programs relevant to your academic and professional background from List of Eligible Programs.
  • Have a clear understanding of the academic and English skills required for all selected programs.
  • Must not have applied to the Ireland Scholarship Scheme more than once.
  • Be able to take up the scholarship in the academic year 2023/2024.

How to apply: Eligible and eligible applicants for the Ireland Scholarship Program – Africa Scholarship 2023/24 should read the Applicant guidance note carefully before completing the application, as the eligibility criteria for each country may differ.
