Belgium is a European country that aims to attract academically talented students by offering fully funded scholarships for Masters and PhD programmes. Most master’s programs last 2 years while PhD programs last around 3-4 years. A large number of Belgian higher institutions are known for providing high-quality education and allow international students to study without IELTS or TOEFL.


Below are some of the most popular fully funded scholarships in Belgium available to international students.


VLIR-UOS annually offers 29 scholarships to international students from Africa, Asia and Latin America for training and postgraduate programs. Scholarship recipients will study at the Flemish University of Flanders. The VLIR-UOS scholarship program also accepts applications for International Training Programs (ITP).

VLIR-UOS offers fully funded scholarships to international students covering:

The ARES Belgium scholarship offers international students the opportunity to study bachelor’s, master’s and continuing education at top Belgian universities. More than 130 scholarships are awarded for postgraduate studies and degree programmes. 70 scholarships awarded for continuing education or internship programs The Ares Belgium scholarship program covers the following:

  • Travel expenses
  • Monthly scholarships (€1150/month)
  • Indirect shipping costs (€150)
  • registration fees
  • Installation, tuition and return costs (€700)
  • medical insurance
  • Travel costs in the context of inter-university training.

The Flemish government usually offers 30 scholarships to international students from all countries every year to study postgraduate programs in Flanders and Brussels. This scholarship covers the following:

  • accommodation expenses
  • Medical insurance
  • The grant €8200
  • Tuition waiver

To receive this scholarship, candidates must apply to any of the Flemish host universities such as:

This is one of the most recognized scholarships, fully funded by the European Union for various Master’s and PhD programs in Europe. The scholarship covers living expenses (€1100-€1200 per month), tuition fees, visa costs, travel and insurance costs for students. International students from any country are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree to be eligible for this scholarship. You do not need to have work experience before applying for this scholarship. Students with low CGPA are encouraged to apply. The Global Minds Doctoral Fellowship Program at KU Leuven selects outstanding candidates in developing countries to apply for a fellowship in their PhD program. Recipients of this fellowship spend 24 months doing research at KU Leuven and 24 months doing research at their institution. This is called a “sandwich system”. PhD candidates are therefore co-financed by their home institution and by KU Leuven. The Global Minds Doctoral Scholarship Program covers the following:

  • full tuition
  • Monthly scholarships (€2,199 per month)
  • Medical insurance
  • air tickets
  • Research Allowance (€310 per month)

UC Louvain – the best French-speaking university in Belgium, through the partnership South scholarship, offers the opportunity for international students to pursue their PhD studies in Belgium on a fully funded agreement. The duration of the award is 36 months and covers the following costs:
