Commonwealth Scholarships 2023/24 | Eligibility criteria

To be considered for Commonwealth Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies in the UK, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen or have been granted refugee status from an eligible Commonwealth country or be a British Protected Person.
  • Be a permanent resident of an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Be available to start their academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September 2023.
  • By September 2023, have a first degree of at least an upper second class (2:1) or a lower second class (2:2) degree and a relevant postgraduate degree (usually a master’s degree).
  • They have not studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a high-income country.
  • You cannot afford to study at UK university without this scholarship.
  • Have submitted all supporting documents in the required format

Scholarship benefits

  • Approved air tickets from the Scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of their scholarship (CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares, nor the cost of travel undertaken before the award is confirmed) – funded by CSC.
  • Approved tuition fees: full tuition fees are covered by an agreement between CSC and the UK university and fellows are not responsible for paying any part of the tuition fees.
  • Allowance (living allowance) at a rate of £1,236 per month or £1,516 per month for universities in the metropolitan London area (rates refer to current levels) – paid and funded by the university.
  • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable – paid and funded by the university.
  • Dissertation grant for the cost of a thesis or dissertation, as applicable – requested and paid by the university. sponsored by CSC.
  • Study Travel Grant for travel costs associated with studying within the UK or abroad – claimed by and paid for by the university. sponsored by CSC.
  • Contribution to the cost of a mandatory tuberculosis (TB) test where required for a visa application (receipts must be provided) – requested by and paid for by the university; funded by the CSC.
  • If Fellows have children and are widowed, divorced or single parents, child benefit of £529 per month for the first child and £131 per month for the second and third children under 16 if the Fellows are accompanied by children and live with them at the same address in the UK (prices are at current levels).
  • If Scholars agree that they have a disability, CSC will provide a full assessment of their needs and eligibility for additional financial support.

Application Procedures

How to apply: Interested applicants for Commonwealth Scholarships 2023/24 must apply and secure admission to study an approved postgraduate degree at a participating UK university in addition to applying for a Commonwealth Scholarship through CSC’s online application system.
