The call for applications for the Belgian Government Postgraduate and Education Scholarships (ARES) for the academic year 2023-2024 is now open.

Scholarships for masters and training courses offers you the opportunity to attend a one-year specialized postgraduate program or a 4 to 6-month advanced training program at a higher education institution in the Walloon-Brussels Federation, Belgium.

Belgian Government ARES Scholarships 2023 | Eligibility criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  1. To be eligible, applicants must be living and working in their home country when they apply.
  2. Be a national, live and work in one of the following countries: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Peru, Philippines , Republic of Guinea (Conakry), Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
  3. they hold a diploma comparable to a master’s level degree (300 ECTS credits) from a Belgian university for advanced postgraduate studies and education measurement courses (equivalent to Bac+5). You hold a diploma comparable to an undergraduate level degree (180 ECTS credits) for advanced graduates (equivalent to Bac+3). The applicant must have held the relevant academic qualification for a maximum of 20 years at the start of the course. This maximum period is increased by one year upon childbirth and/or adoption.
  4. occupation relevant professional experience in an ARES partner country at least two years old post graduate for advanced graduate, post graduate for advanced graduate and continuing education courses.
  5. Complete the application in the language in which the education is provided and can certify a good written and oral knowledge of it. Furthermore, knowing at least French allows a good integration into everyday life in Belgium.
  6. Apply only for a training course

Undergraduate or Postgraduate Scholarship Benefits

international travel costs Evidence must be provided Economy class travel on an IATA-approved airline, with a maximum of one return ticket per academic year.

indirect shipping fees one time This amount is given once per stay, upon the beneficiary’s arrival.
Arrival allowance, tuition and return fees flat rate This amount is given once per stay, upon the beneficiary’s arrival.
Registration fees At the current rate for DGD grantees.
insurance premiums Directly paid by ARES.
Travel expenses that are part of the inter-university training Evidence must be provided Reimbursable based on actual expenses incurred, with receipts provided.

Application Procedures

How to apply: Interested applicants for the Belgian Government ARES Scholarships 2023-2024 are completely online. Applying for an ARES grant is completely free. ARES does not charge fees at any stage of the application or selection process. Interested candidates should follow the steps (below) to apply.

Please note that the application process is now online through the GIRAF platform.

  • First, you must create a GIRAF account by clicking here🇧🇷 Your account will be verified (within a few hours to a few days) and you will receive a confirmation message.
  • Once your account is validated, you can access the application form through it competing calls tab of your GIRAF profile. Please note that you only need to click once on the “Start Application for Postgraduate and Training Programs” button in GIRAF. You will then find your application form at My duties his table competing calls
  • You can fill out your form multiple times as long as you use the ‘Save and edit later’ option. You will find your form every time at My assignments his table competing calls tab in GIRAF.
  • Once you click “Submit my application”, your file is transmitted to ARES and you can no longer modify it. You can still consult it at My submitted files

Application files will not be considered if (are):

  • incomplete;
  • sent by post, email or fax. The process is now entirely online through GIRAF.
  • submitted through GIRAF outside the application period;
  • not completed in the language in which the training program is provided;
  • do not meet one of the acceptance criteria clearly stated on the form (certified copy of diploma, age, professional experience, etc.).
