Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) 2023 Application Update

University of Amsterdam is currently inviting international students from outside the EU/EEA countries to apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) – a scholarship covers tuition fees and part of living for one academic year with the possibility of extension for a second year (for two annual graduate programs).

Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence. Therefore, students receiving AMS are expected to complete their first year of study with good results (at least 40 ECTS) in order to receive the scholarship for the second year as well.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) | requirements

Applicants wishing to apply for an AMS program should:

  • do not have the citizenship of one of the EU/EEA countries or Suisse
  • are not eligible for support under the Dutch scholarship and study loan scheme (for more information see duo.nl).
  • are not entitled to pay the reduced fees for EEA students at the UvA
  • they do not receive a full-coverage scholarship for the same period of study as AMS
  • have submitted a full application to one of the MSc programs (see your MSc program website for the application and admission process)
  • have been (or will be) admitted for the first time to one of the MSc programs at the UvA
  • be able to comply with the requirements to obtain a Dutch visa (if applicable)
  • have completed their previous academic program no more than 3 years ago

Application Procedures

  • How to apply: Interested and eligible international students who wish to apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) follow the procedures.
  • Applying for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship is part of the application process for the postgraduate program of your choice. In your application form, we ask you if you want to be considered for a UvA scholarship. Check this box if you want to be considered and if you meet all the requirements listed above.
  • In addition, you should include a paragraph in your motivation letter explaining why you wish to be nominated for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship and what it would mean for your future academic career.
  • After applying, the coordinators of the MSc Programs decide which students are eligible to apply for the scholarship. All students will be notified as soon as possible
